City Bus Fills Transportation Gap

September 26, 2012

The City of Liberal, Kansas has recently implemented a public transit program for its residents, consisting of two wheelchair accessible shuttle-bus style vehicles that run fixed routes and one van utilized for door-to-door on-demand paratransit service. This new public service is extremely helpful to residents who do not have vehicles or do not drive, saving time and making it much more comfortable than walking outside in Liberal’s summer heat or the bitter cold of winter.

The fixed routes have five “transfer stops” that allow riders to board on one side of town, de-board that bus, and re-board on the bus that services the other side of town to reach their destination. This can all be done without paying a second fare if the passenger transfers within one hour. The stops include two grocery stores, the hospital, the area college and technical schools, and the local Senior Center. Both routes also stop at National Beef, the city’s largest employer.

Fares are $1.00 per one-way trip or $30 per unlimited monthly pass. Applications for half-fare cards are available at City Hall for senior citizens, low-income passengers, and riders with disabilities. Students may present a student I.D. to receive half-fare rates. On-Demand paratransit rates are $2.00 per one-way trip or $40 per unlimited monthly pass.
